Each channel has its own address on the internet and is visible to anyone in possession of that address and any access credentials to access the content at that address.

The set of channels available at the different addresses constitutes a ladder that can be opened with a media player capable of opening streaming streams.

The playlist can be saved on a single file that will then collect all the addresses of the channels and on-demand content included in the IPTV package.

The playlist file (M3U) can be saved on a device or it can also be resident on the server that provides the channel package.

As already mentioned there is no limit to the number of channels that a package can contain. The limit is sometimes in the receivers that do not manage too long playlists. As far as I know, the minimum limit of some IPTV decoders is however 2000 channels.

The video content streaming system lends itself to the live viewing of satellite or terrestrial television channels, but also of broadcasts to be started at the request of the user.

In live broadcasts, streaming is multicast.

Transmission of this type requires the content provider to transmit the same stream to all its users at the same time without the need to duplicate it for each of them.

The connection string: how to see the channels

As I told you a little while ago, the set of addresses of the individual channels is saved in a file with the M3U extension, the playlist.

Normally the IPTV service provider only provides the lineup file, not the addresses of the individual streaming streams available for each channel.

In this way, if the service is enriched with new content or if some are removed, it will be sufficient to update the M3U file to spread the new content to all users.

For the same reason, the distributed lineup file is made available on a server and from there downloaded by users, or rather from users’ devices, thanks to an address that points to the M3U file.

This address is called the IPTV connection string.

To view the IPTV you just need to enter the connection string in the device you will use to view the content.

Terrestrial and satellite decoders

Many decoders for over-the-air broadcasting also allow you to view internet broadcasts.

This is a somewhat separate chapter because most of the decoders for digital terrestrial or satellite do not have a widespread and shared operating system but a proprietary operating system.

Consequently, it is not possible to use any of the apps that I have listed above because they are not compatible with these devices.

However, many decoders manage IPTV very well by managing streaming via the internet with apps integrated into the firmware. Almost all of them share the same approach: you insert the connection string in the configurations of the dedicated app which, at each opening, downloads the list of channels and allows you to browse it as if it were a normal channel list.

Some older decoders do not give the possibility to load the connection string, but need a text file that contains line by line, the list of addresses of the individual contents. If you have a decoder of this type, you may be interested in the string conversion service offered by smart IPTV.
